Nicki Minaj created an amazing headline Saturday night by offering to pay for her fans college expenses.
After sending an initial tweet telling fans from any country to post themselves singing her new single, "Regret In Your Tears" on the Musically app for a chance to hang out with her, a fan challenged her to pay for their tuition. Rising to the occasion, she responded from her personal account tweeting, "Show me straight As that I can verify w/ur school and I'll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest? Dead serious. Shld I set it up?" And indeed she did! That day, Ms. Minaj helped over 15 students by paying for their tuition, books and student loans.
Celebrities have the fate of a generation on their shoulders. They are labeled role models (whether they want the title or not) and are held accountable for how they choose to use their influence. For many children, teenagers and young adults, celebrities serve as real examples of people or personalities that these groups admire.
A recent study by the University of Arkansas in collaboration with the Manchester Business School in London found that consumers (ages 18-24) take on an active role in developing their identities and appearance based upon celebrities. They are more susceptible to celebrity brand endorsements than other age groups. Research by Nielson conducted in 2015 broke down the level of trust in advertising formats by different generations. It found that celebrity endorsements resonate more strongly with Generation Z (ages 15-20) and Millennial (ages 21-34) audiences.
Nicki (along with other celebrities) dispels the myth that all celebrities care more about the money coming in than the encouragement going out. By allowing her heart to guide her wallet, she changed lives, relieved stress and inspired more academic success by stating she'd do it again in a month or two.
Whether we realize it or not, people are watching. You do not have to be a celebrity to be noticed or admired. However, when behaving kindly, regardless of who or when, that kind deed or word will always be the correct behavior for others to see and replicate. Let's make sure the kindness that we profess within is unmistakable in the world.
