Write The Vision: Love and Happiness
"Love...a word that comes and goes, but few people really know, what it means to really love somebody"- Kirk Franklin and the Family.
Companionship is something that we naturally long for in life. We thrive on having someone to share our lives with, and while that's understandable, there's a few things we need to keep in mind.
Firstly, love will happen when it's supposed to. No amount of timelines or restrictions you give will rush God's timing. Megan Good and Devon Franklin wrote a book entitled "The Wait", explaining the importance of preparing yourself for your husband or wife, then Ciara and Russell Wilson showed us what waiting does; assure a relationship you're proud of and at peace with.
So what do we do while we're waiting?
Preparation is key. While you're single or dating, use this time to master loving yourself first and acknowledging traits about yourself that you love or hate, and deal with past hurts so that you don't bring them into the next relationship.
Decide what you want in a mate- be specific and real with yourself. Yes, looks are important to most of us, but look beyond those to the characteristics you desire in a person and think about the type of "struggles" you can handle. With love and marriage, the goal is to love an imperfect person as perfectly as possible, so it's a good idea to identify what issues you would be willing to handle with someone else. If you're already married, remember those vows you accepted and try your best to live up to them. It will take work, as all things usually do.
Please understand that having a companion is not the highlight of your success. You are so much more than a 'bae' to show off on Instagram and more than the ability to answer those "When are you getting married/having babies?" questions.
Even if you don't believe in God, I encourage you to consider His characteristics in your potential mate. He's forgiving, affectionate and loves us unselfishly, enough to die on a cross just to prove it. We're all worth that kind of love.
Please let me know if I hit on those topics we discussed effectively, and I hope you enjoy the post!
