A Kind Volunteer
In order to be the change we wish to see in the world, we must first realize that there is no distinct way to achieve it. With our individual experiences come personalized stories, thoughts and journeys, and I’ve found volunteering to be a great way to make an instant impact.
Here’s 4 reasons to consider making volunteering a habit:
1. There’s a variety of opportunities
With an infinite number of organizations to look into, it’s a guarantee you’ll find something that aligns with your personal beliefs and fits your fancy. Volunteer Hub is my favorite site to find possible openings. The site matches your interests with your location and lists all the jobs that suit your need.
2. Time flexibility is always a plus
While spending my summer with Ronald Mcdonald House Charities, I committed to three days a week and 4 hours a day. If your time is more restricted and you like a specific organization, tailor your service to match your schedule and go twice a month or spread your good deeds around and do one-day events with whomever you choose. KAE's Founder also works at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to create education videos, podcasts and telephone/web programs for blood cancer patients. You can check out their volunteer opportunities here!
3. The impact lasts a lifetime
The fleeting moments spent in service cannot compare to the everlasting impression volunteering leaves. Yes, we don’t have to volunteer to touch lives. However, there is an indescribable feeling associated with being in the trenches with someone and helping their vision come to life or witnessing someone’s face light up because you served them a meal. The relationships fostered with those who feel loved and cared for are priceless gems that can’t be found anywhere else.
4. Major Career Points!
If you want to sharpen your skills in your profession or test out another occupation, volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door at companies you dream of. By doing this, you open the door to showcase your talents, show initiative and learn intently without so much pressure. Granted, once it’s known that you’re a master at your craft, the workload will increase, but it won’t be anything you can’t handle and could potentially lead to a permanent position. Don’t be afraid to ask around for positions or volunteer yourself to lend a hand whenever you’re needed. It could lead you exactly to where you want to be.
At the very least, volunteering is a way to have fun and gain an exclusive look at things you’ve seen from the outside.
Someone’s waiting for you, so go for it!
Moments matter.
